Most people know at least the basic baby things. You already know that a baby will take some time to get to know you. Most babies are able to recognize their mothers immediately after being born, but you already knew that. You probably already know that babies develop at vastly different rates. There is no set schedule for walking or talking or eating solid foods or sitting up or any other “first” in a baby’s life. The fact is that most people do not quite grasp just how intricate a baby’s development really is. Nothing is more interesting than watching a baby grow up. Between conception and toddlerhood is an incredibly exciting time. It doesn’t look like babies do all that much in their first years of life but beneath that calm (and sometimes fussy) exterior is a factory that is working like mad to grow, change and develop!

Did you know already that babies are not very good at telling colors apart? It will take some time after a baby is born for his eyes to finish maturing and for the synapses between them and his brain to be complete. This is one of the reasons why babies respond better to primary colors whey they are used in a room or on toys. Bold reds, blues, greens and even black and white are best for babies. Babies can’t tell the difference between pastels.

This is often the motivation behind a baby’s toy preferences. Pastels are meant more for an adult’s sense of cuteness while the black and white things that are so often turned down are actually better for your son or daughter’s development. Most people already accept that babies are able to hear sounds even before they are born. Many sounds cause babies to have strong reactions-reactions that have been recorded before the baby is born. Did you know, though, that decibel levels are just as important while the baby is in the womb as it is once the baby is born? A fetus’s ears are impressionable and sensitive. Doctors recommend that, while women are pregnant that they keep their music, televisions, etc below the level of a modern vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaners usually push the limit of the baby’s comfort level with noise, so it is a good idea to keep the music down and to avoid things like heavy construction and loud traffic.

A baby learns how to communicate physically before he or she learns to communicate verbally. This is just one of the reasons that the “baby signs” program is so popular. Signing programs teach babies how to use physical actions for things like hunger, thirst, tiredness, needing a diaper change, etc which helps them communicate better with their parents. Studies show that babies who learn how to communicate physically before they can communicate verbally (through programs like “baby signs”) have stronger communication skills as adults than those who were left to learn verbal communication first.

There are lots of things about babies that most people do not know. Early childhood development is amazing. Watching your kids develop and grow is more fun when you know what is happening!
