1st September 2011 by Babies No CommentsHaving kids is an experience few would give up for anything, yet it also presents parents with lots of hard decisions. As you attempt to sort out the various situations that come up between parents and children, the following suggestions can come in handy.
Regardless of what you do as a parent, the most important thing that you can do is be involved with them so that they know you are there, even if you are a little strict.
Each child has the possibility and probability of reaching great heights in life, but this is stymied when parents ignore their kids or neglect them altogether. Our modern technological society, and the necessity of both parents needing a job, makes it very hard for children as their parents find less and less time to spend with them. Being a successful parent is not hard to do, as long as you take the time to do activities with your kids so that they know you are there and that you care. Disciplining children can be a very difficult task, sometimes heart-wrenching, but your kids need to understand that their consequences for what they do. Bad behaviors should receive consequences that are not too harsh, including grounding them off of talking to their friends or taking a few of their video games away. Constant enforcement of the rules that you establish is a necessity so that your kids realize you are serious. Every rule that you set up needs to be adhered to, and not something passing in the wind that may or may not be required. It is so important to always be consistent with the enforcement of your policies, otherwise your kids will not develop a sense of responsibility or structure in regard to the choices that they make.
Every parent needs advice, support or another adult to talk to sometimes. While this isn’t always possible for various reasons, ideally the two parents should be involved in child related issues, decisions and tasks. If you have to, join a local support group, which is especially helpful for single parents; ask family and friends for help when necessary. The best parents are those who recognize when they need help and learn how to ask for it. If you don’t have a clear idea of who to call when you need help, make it a priority to build a support system for yourself. Needing help or advice doesn’t mean you’re not competent as a parent, only that you’re human. Sometimes someone else can offer a fresh point of view and give you a useful suggestion.
